IU Data Center an Investment in IT Security

The Indiana University data center currently under construction marks an investment in the security and sustainability of the information technology infrastructure at the university. The new building will upgrade currently outdated facilities and provide more reliable protection from natural disaster. The three 10,000-square-foot machine rooms of the single-story data center will house crucial computing, networking, and storage equipment, providing a safe and stable hub for digital growth and expansion.

The data center's bunkered design will withstand natural disasters—like the tornadoes that have struck the area in recent history—and it will protect valuable technological assets including the supercomputers Big Red and Quarry, and the Bloomington hub of Indiana's statewide I-Light network. As a hub for the school's most advanced technologies, not only will the new facility protect these assets, it will also offer the logistical space and flexibility to keep Indiana University competitive in research advancements and grants.

The data center is planned for completion in Spring 2009, and will be the centerpiece of an expanding series of information technology buildings located east of the 45/46 State Road Bypass and north of Tenth Street, at the University School Complex. Upon completion, UITS will undertake the relocation of infrastructure from its current location in the Wrubel Computing Center.
