Chinese-American Network Symposium
CANS logo bullet pointing to graphic Indiana University's leadership position in international networking will take center stage this fall when it hosts the Chinese-American Network Symposium (CANS), bringing together over 100 networking experts from the United States and China. This year's CANS event in Indianapolis has adopted the "One World One Dream" theme of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games: October 20-22; University Place Conference Center & Hotel, Indianapolis. Registration fee is reduced through Sept. 18.

Grant to support sustainability research
Katy Börner bullet pointing to graphic IU School of Library and Information Science faculty member Katy Börner and a colleague have received a $100K grant from the National Science Foundation to compile a comprehensive dataset of scholarly publications, patents, research grants, policy documents, and popular science pieces to map basic research and technology on sustainability. The project seeks to create novel insights into the emergence of sustainability science as a new field of research.

IU researchers launch social networking for scientists
IU researchers have introduced Laboratree, a web-based solution to the complex problems of scientific collaboration. Designed to streamline research and enhance collaborative social networking for the science community, Laboratree will enable scientists to securely manage research papers and data, organize groups and projects, send group messages, author blogs, and customize personal and group profiles – all online. Professor's film noir podcasts draw interest
Richard Edwards bullet pointing to graphic Richard Edwards, an assistant professor of media arts and science at IUPUI, is an expert on the genre of film noir, the highly stylized films that were a staple in American movie theaters during the 1930s and '40s. Edwards and a former colleague are hosts of "Out of the Past: Investigating Film Noir," a popular podcast featured in Apple's iTunes store. The free audio download features a series of discussions about the genre and its impact on filmmaking and popular culture. Newer forms of noir filmmaking are also examined.

IU School of Informatics named to Computerworld's top IT schools to watch
Informatics Dean Robert B. Schnabel bullet pointing to graphic Computerworld magazine announced in its August 2008 issue its "Top IT Schools to Watch 2008," and the Indiana University School of Informatics was among the 10 schools recognized in a feature article on graduate programs. The schools, including institutions such as Carnegie Mellon University, Stanford University, the University of Pennsylvania, and the University of Virginia, were selected based on how well they were keeping pace with today's IT workplace, and the relevance of their curriculum to the ever-changing technology industry.

IU to play role in Bloomington tech growth
Informatics Dean Robert B. Schnabel bullet pointing to graphic The Bloomington Herald-Times reports on a new partnership aimed at growing Bloomington’s technology sector. The Bloomington Technology Partnership -- guided by an advisory committee including IU School of Informatics Dean Robert Schnabel -- will promote technology sector businesses and promote Bloomington as a center for tech companies. The partnership will also focus on recruiting top technology talent to the Bloomington area. Google bus to stop at IU

Grant supports IU Wii research
